The
exhilaration of youth finds its expression in popular
music - the music of rebellion. For some the music becomes
more than a passion, it becomes a calling. Rubin began
his musical life at age 12 when he was handed his first
pair of drum sticks. Infused by his older brother with
a love for the Police, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon and
Kate Bush, Rubin began to explore the landscape that
would inform his musical life. After exhausting the
scene in Israel, his homeland, Rubin set off for the
primordial source of the music he loves – the
U.S.A. At the age of 19, he landed in New York City
and began playing drums with a number of NYC bands.
Rubin cut his teeth at local venues like the legendary
CBGB’s, The Lion’s Den, and the Knitting
Factory, teaching himself to sing and play keyboards
along the way. He also spent time as a session player
in Minneapolis. Returning to New York in 2003 he decided
he could no longer rely on the mercurial whims of other
songwriters. He began writing material for his first
solo effort simply titled “Rubin.” To perform
the material live, he taught himself to play bass and
enlisted an all star cast of local musicians. Rubin
is currently in the studio working on his second solo
effort “Leaving My Love Behind” tentatively
scheduled for release this summer. The new CD reinforces
Rubin’s commitment to spirited songwriting and
engaging rhythmic styles, drawing from influences as
grounded as the Beatles and Coldplay and as eclectic
as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. |
